Currently, there are seven (7) routes to the Flagship ACIB qualifications:
- Regular Route:
This route is open to holders of the Institute’s Diploma, HND/BSc, MSc, MBA, Ph.D. etc. as well as recognized professional qualifications.
- Linkage Route:
The route allows graduates of Banking & Finance and other Social and Management Sciences, specifically Business Administration, Accounting, Economics and Marketing of a partnering institution to be examined in a few subjects in the institute’s banking professional examinations.
- Practitioners Route:
This route allows practitioners who have spent not less than 10 years and have attained a minimum of manager grade with relevant academic/professional qualifications to be examined in few subjects and qualify as professional bankers (ACIB).
- Chartered Banker MBA Route:
This route employs a flexible and blending learning approach and affords candidates who go through it to graduate with three (3) qualifications simultaneously i.e. MBA Bangor, ACIB (Nigeria) and ACIB (Scotland). click here to apply for the Chartered Banker MBA.
- Certification Route:
Candidates who aspire to have the ACIB qualification could use the Certification Route. The institute presently offers Certification Programmes in 16 subject areas. This route requires the successful completion of relevant Certification programme against which exemptions are allowed in the flagship ACIB examinations.
- Bank Academy Route:
The route affords graduates of CIBN Accredited Academies generous exemptions in the institutes banking professional examinations to qualify as professional bankers (ACIB).
- M.SC/ACIB Route:
This route affords graduates the privilege of running one programme and graduating with two qualifications, i.e. MSc/MBA and ACIB.
Currently, the Institute’s Banking Professional examinations are in three stages viz: Diploma, Intermediate Professional and Chartered Banker Levels:
- Diploma Level:
This consist of the following eight (8) subjects: Elements of Banking, Basic Economics, Accounting & Business Finance, Business Law, Fundamentals of Marketing, Information & Communication Technology, Quantitative Techniques and Business Communication Skills.
The objectives of the examination at the Diploma level include:

To develop and expand the understanding of the Financial Service Environment.

To ensure a steady stream of technical level professionals for the industry.

To equip candidates with requisite knowledge and expose them to modern banking practice and processes that will enable them fit into the banking system.

- Intermediate Professional Level:
The level consists of the following six (6) subjects: Financial Economics, Financial & Management Accounting, Marketing of Financial Services, International Trade & Finance, Strategic Management & Leadership and Corporate Financial Management.
The objective of this level of the examination is to provide candidates with the professional knowledge and skills required to take up middle management role in the banking and finance industry.
- Chartered Banker Level:
The Chartered Banker Level consists of four core (compulsory) subjects and five elective subjects out of which a candidate is expected to select only one, namely Financial Planning & Control, Treasury Management, Human Capital Management, Banking Regulation & Supervision and Principles & Practice of Risk Management
The core subjects include: Banking Law, Ethics & Corporate Governance, Bank Lending & Credit Administration, Management of Financial Institutions and Practice of Banking. The objective of this level is to provide candidates with the requisite professional knowledge, skills and competencies required for senior management roles in the industry. Successful completion of the three stages of the examinations will lead to the award of the Flagship Certificate known as the Associateship of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (ACIB).
The current Banking Professional Examinations Regulations and Syllabus guiding the administration of the Institute’s examinations became effective in January 2020 and will as a policy expire in October 2025 after the statutory four years life cycle excluding the one-year transition period.
