Introduction

The Capacity Building and Certification Division is in charge of
conducting/administering the entire examinations of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN).

Although the history of the CIBN dates back to November, 1963,
when it was established as a local centre of The Chartered Institute of Bankers, London, its first indigenous examination commenced with the Foundation Stage in April 1978 while the Professional examination was held for the first time in April 1984 with two candidates qualifying as Associates. Before 1978, the Institute only conducted the examination on behalf of the Chartered Institute of Bankers, London.

Objectives Of The Examination

The Statutory responsibilities of the Institute are to determine the standards of knowledge and skills to be attained by persons seeking to become member of the banking profession as well as conduct professional examinations leading to the award of certificates as may be prescribed by the Institute.

The objective of the Institute’s examination therefore is to deepen knowledge and enhance the quality of competencies of human capacity in the banking industry through the various certifications approved by the Governing Council from time to time.

Eligibility

Candidature is open to all individuals from all disciplines and all sectors of the economy who are interested in becoming Professional/Chartered Bankers, provided they meet the minimum qualification requirements approved by the Governing Council from time to time and must have registered as student members. The membership registration number obtained will be used as examination number at the commencement of writing the examinations.

Entry Qualification for Examinations

The minimum qualification for the Institute’s examinations is first degree, equivalent professional qualification accepted by the Institute or any other equivalent qualification from reputable and recognized institutions.

Mode of Examination

Over the years, the Institute’s examinations were conducted via Computer Based Testing (CBT). However, to align with global best practices, the Institute took a strategic step to administer its examinations using the Remote Online Proctoring Platform.

This was successfully piloted during the October 2022 Diet Examinations with the Certification Programmes and was fully implemented in April 2023 in all the examinations. The objective of this initiative is to make the examination processes more flexible and convenient.

Examinations are NO LONGER TAKEN AT A PHYSICAL EXAMINATION VENUE. Candidates are at liberty to write the examinations in any comfortable/suitable serene environment of their choice without being restricted to a particular location or confinement.

In the same vein, The Governing Council recently approved the conduct of four (4) diets annually, i.e. February, April, July and October. Only the certification programmes (excluding Microfinance) will be administered for the four (4) diets in 2025, the ACIB and Microfinance Examinations will be conducted in April and October as usual. Full implementation will commence in 2026.
