The Governing Council of The Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) serves as the apex governing body entrusted with the strategic oversight, policy direction, and ethical stewardship of the Institute. Comprising distinguished professionals and thought leaders from across the banking and finance industry, academia, and allied sectors, the Council plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of banking practice and professional development in Nigeria.
Established under the provisions of the CIBN Act No. 5 of 2007, the Council is responsible for upholding the Institute's core mandate to determine the standards of knowledge and skills to be attained by persons seeking to become members of the banking profession and to promote ethical conduct and professionalism within the banking profession in Nigeria.
Members of the Council are either elected or appointed in accordance with the Institute’s legal framework and governance principles. They are individuals of proven integrity, with vast experience and contributions in various spheres of banking and finance. Collectively, they provide strategic direction, fostering industry collaboration, and ensuring alignment with global best practices.
The Council operates through a number of specialized committees that oversee critical aspects of the Institute’s work, including ethics, finance, capacity building, research, and membership development. These committees play a critical role in ensuring that decisions are informed, inclusive, and strategically aligned with the Institute’s long-term vision.
